BRIMS Movie Night at Albemarle Ciderworks
BRIMS Movie Night at Albemarle Ciderworks

Paul Wagner's:  Out Of Ireland

Driven from their homeland by factors from the great potato famine of the 1840s to oppressive Protestant landlords who seized land from Catholics and evicted them from their homes by the thousands.

By using letters from Irish immigrants to their families back home in Ireland, director Paul Wagner creates a documentary portrait of the Irish exodus to the United States, focusig on the experiences of eight immigrants to showcase the issues that motivated the wave of departures, which included religious repression as well as crippling poverty. Actors such as Liam Neeson bring the letters to life, and experts on immigration also lend their analyses.

Period letters and songs, archival and modern photography, and illustrative anecdotes as well as broad analysis are all deployed to convey the flavor as well as the sequence of historical events. We learn how Irishmen came to America expecting streets paved with gold, and wound up not only paving the streets themselves but building the bridges, skyscrapers, and railroads.

This event is Free to attend (donations to BRIMS are appreciated).

All are welcome. Light bites, movie snacks, and cider will be available for purchase. but once the seats are gone, they're gone. Indoor seating will be provided, all with an excellent view of the screen.  The doors open at 6pm with the film beginning promptly at 7 pm on Friday, the 10th of  January. The run time is ~ 1 hour and 55 Minutes. Feel free to come early for a glass of Cider and to share your excitement for the film.

Pruning 101 Workshop
Pruning 101 Workshop

Careful pruning ensures a more bountiful harvest. Find out how much to prune, where to make the pruning cuts, and when it should be done.

This class is structured to take orchardists from the planting of the nursery tree, through the early years of training and pruning, into lifetime maintenance, rejuvenation, and even bringing old or feral trees back into production.  We'll go over basic pruning cuts and strategies, do's and don'ts, and tool selection and maintenance, all peppered with anecdotes from lifetime practitioners.  We'll touch on pruning for stone fruits as well.  The first portion of this class will be conducted indoors, followed by a foray into the orchard for live demos.  Sign up for this workshop to have your name entered in the drawing for the classroom demo tree!

Instructor Bio:   Michael Lachance first became interested in orchard and vineyard production while an undergraduate student in his native Missouri, balancing schoolwork with various work experiences on historic farms located along the Missouri River there.  He has both a BS degree in horticulture and soils, and a MS in entomology from the University of Missouri.  He came to Virginia in 1986 to research pests in fruit at Virginia Tech.

Michael retired in 2017 from Virginia Cooperative Extension after a 26-year career, providing pest management and horticulture programs for farmers and homeowners in central Virginia.  His work in Extension allowed him to also address small farm business management, intergenerational land transfer, forage production, and resource conservation. Michael has held statewide positions for the Virginia’s Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension (SARE) program, the Virginia Master Naturalist and Master Gardener Programs and is past president of the Virginia Natural History Society.

He now teaches as an adjunct for horticulture courses offered at J Sargent Reynolds Community College, continuing his advocacy or pesticide use reduction, and designing protected habitats for beneficial insects & pollinators in public use areas, homes and agricultural landscapes.  He is the current educational committee chairperson for the Rockfish Valley Foundation which operates natural history center and park in Nelson County.  He is also vice-president of the Elizabeth A. Nolting Charitable Foundation, a 550-acre historic farm in Louisa County that dates back to 1790.

Join us on February 16th for yoga & cider, guided by Ellen Goldlust.

Ellen Goldlust is an RYT-200 Yoga Alliance–certified instructor who has been teaching yoga since 2016, and practicing for much longer. The class will be beginner-friendly (no experience required!) and appropriate for all levels of fitness, with lots of modifications offered to make the practice more or less challenging. Silent Book Club 2.23
Silent Book Club 2.23

Sip cider and read in quiet camaraderie. No assigned reading, no obligations. Bring your own book of choice. This is a free social event hosted in our Orchard Room.

We are excited to be Charlottesville's second chapter of Silent Book Club, an international organization bringing bibliophiles together.

From the official website of Silent Book Club:

"At Silent Book Club, there's no assigned reading. All readers are welcome—ebooks, audiobooks, textbooks, comic books... it's BYOBook. Our events are free and support local businesses. Friends and strangers gather at a set time and location, order food or drinks, share what they're reading, and settle in for an hour of silent, sustained reading. At the end of the hour, attendees can socialize—or not!

We started Silent Book Club because reading with friends enriches our lives and makes us happy. We love hearing about what people are reading (often in their other book clubs) and we think it's important to put down our phones and be social."

Schedule:
12:30 Arrive early to order food/ drinks/ chat
