Live Debate: the American neutrality act during WW2.

Join us for a heated debate on a country divided from the oldest CIO at UVA.

Celebrating their 200th year the “Jefferson Literary and Debating Society” will be challenging whether the Neutrality acts that were created during the 1930’s should have been bent or broken to give aid to Europe.

During the 1930s and 1940s The United States was divided on how to respond to the Axis of power consuming large portions of Europe and Asia.  What do you think America should have done?

You will have your chance to interact with the Jefferson Literary and Debating Society and ask questions or voice your opinions after the presentation of both the debate groups. We urge you to bring a pen and pad to write down your ideas, as any interruptions may lead to ejection from the debate.

This debate will start promptly at 6.30pm, with snacks and cider available for purchase.

Silent Book Club 11/17/24
Silent Book Club 11/17/24

Sip cider and read in quiet camaraderie. No assigned reading, no obligations. Bring your own book of choice. This is a free social event hosted in our Orchard Room.

We are excited to be Charlottesville's second chapter of Silent Book Club, an international organization bringing bibliophiles together.

From the official website of Silent Book Club:

"At Silent Book Club, there's no assigned reading. All readers are welcome—ebooks, audiobooks, textbooks, comic books... it's BYOBook. Our events are free and support local businesses. Friends and strangers gather at a set time and location, order food or drinks, share what they're reading, and settle in for an hour of silent, sustained reading. At the end of the hour, attendees can socialize—or not!

We started Silent Book Club because reading with friends enriches our lives and makes us happy. We love hearing about what people are reading (often in their other book clubs) and we think it's important to put down our phones and be social."

Schedule:
12:30 Arrive early to order food/ drinks/ chat
1-2pm Reading
Afterwards: Mingle (or keep reading)

You can read about the experience in Cville Weekly's "Tried it in Cville Column" thanks to talented local journalist Kristie

Live Music in the Orchard: Tara Mills

Join us in the Orchard room for live Music & Cider.

Inspired by the Blue Ridge Mountains and the rich musical traditions tied to them, Tara Mills describes her music as, "original mountain americana;" an original blend of folk, bluegrass, and americana. Writing and singing most of her life, it wasn't long before Tara picked up a guitar and taught herself how to express the melodies in her head through her songs and hauntingly beautiful lyrics. Influenced by bluegrass, old country, and traditional mountain folk, she creates an original sound that captures true human feeling and emotion. Based out of Charlottesville, VA, Tara plays and writes in a couple of different musical projects.
